What Will Be Your Answer ?

Elaine Clermont, my facebook friend and fellow blogger, asked me a question while a conversation on facebook. I am quoting it below.

I would pose you a question, one that my daughter just posed to me ... "if we woke up tomorrow, and everyone did what you wanted them to do, if everything was properly balanced and funded and there was peace and justice in the world, what would you do with your life? Would you still have the same job, or would it be obsolete? What would you talk about?"

Actually I had to think quite a bit to find a reply to this question. I don’t think that I’d want everyone to listen to whatever I say. That would be morally wrong. Besides it will get boring after sometime. I think different views and opinions help us to see things from a different angle and find a better solution to our problems. Besides I might not be 100% right all the time. So if everyone did what I wanted them to do then it might bring chaos rather than bring peace and unity.

I know that the world can’t be 100% balanced. But if somehow everything WAS properly balanced and funded and there was peace and justice in this world, I would be content with my life. But I don’t think that I’d be happy. In my opinion there is a huge difference between being happy and being content. IMO to be content we just need to find a way to ‘get rid of’ our problems and needs, but to be happy we need to ‘overcome’ them. We need to DO or achieve something to be happy. But that’s just my opinion. I’d love to hear what you have to say about this issue.

I think that if everything in that question became true than life would become seriously boring. So I think I’d talk about how to add diversity to our lives and be happy. I want to see peace and justice for all. And I also want to see everyone happy, not just ‘content’. I hope that answers the (very hard) question.

I’d like to hear your reply…

  1. I agree with you that "life would become seriously boring." I would be fulfilled (content) that peace and happiness would be achieved, and that there wouldn't be suffering; but in a way, suffering and violence is necessary for us to avoid what is morally wrong and it's what makes us humans, the imperfect mortals we are.

I would remain a student, because I still wouldn't know the past or understand what I can't see.

I would make others do unpredictable things (books, movies, programs, etc) related to things I like, so I could have something to talk about.

[Also, you have a great blog. From the posts I've read, you think and write more about others than yourself (unlike some bloggers in the other hemisphere who are usually selfish). I'm suscribing and I'll try to drop by soon.]

  2. mercenary of light, thanks for commenting...

yes, i would also remain a student, because we study to gather knowledge (it's easy to forget this now a days as it seems like we only go to educational institutes to help us get a good job)

    thanks

  5. I think it's hard for us to imagine what our lives would be like if everything was peaceful and balanced and happy, because we are just hardwired to expect the opposite things. I don't think things would be boring at all if things were peaceful and happy. We would just adapt to new things that bring us happiness.

  7. What an interesting thought. I believe that there must be opposition in order to appreciate anything. In order to enjoy peace and happiness, you need to know what turmoil and sadness are. Only then will you know peace and happiness. It would be wonderful to have, however, everyone has a different idea of what IT is. I would love to hear your thoughts.

  10. For me life would not be boring at all since "what I want" is for people to learn, create, explore, grow, develop (w/out trampling others' rights). There are microcosms and macrocosms we haven't even begun to understand, along with possibly dozens of universes out there to learn about, attempt to understand...to interconnect all the connections of history, culture, language, evolution, nature, psychology, problem- understanding and solving that will always be there as long as inquiring minds search; to analyze, synthesize, interpret, express for every life for as long as life continues..........
