How to Help the Affected Wildlife of Gulf Coast

With the explosion on the Transocean Deepwater Horizon Rig on April 20, 2010 the Gulf of Mexico has become a dangerous site for the wild habitats of that region. Macondo Blowout or the oil spill of Gulf has put both the human and wild lives under threat, especially the wildlife. You can check out some facts about the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill to understand what I’m talking about, if you already don’t know.
Get Involved

What’s done is done! Yes, what happened out there is really bad. Justice (penalize/compensate) should be provided to both the responsible parties and the effected people. And we also have to be very careful so that these occurrences don’t happen again. But now, the most important thing to do is to get involved in helping the people and the animals, birds & marine life of the gulf; and joining hands to clean the area which has been/is being contaminated by the oil spill.

Now the question is how we can get involved? How we can help?

There are many volunteer and non-profit organizations working on the scene besides the government, to reduce the damage done by the oil spill and clear the oil affected wetlands of Illinois. We can work with them as a volunteer or work alone as much as we can to reduce this oil spill crisis. We can offer our time, clean the oil drenched birds, fund the charity organizations by buying their products or we can donate online to help. We can also help by spreading these massages so that more people can get a chance to help. Below I’m listing some of the many organizations working to reduce the after affects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill.

:Catholic Charities Archdiocese of New Orleans: How to help
:Community Center of St Bernard: Donate, Buy a T-Shirt, Volunteer
:Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana: Donate

:The National Wildlife Federation: Text “WILDLIFE” to 20222 to donate $10.  Or donate online.
:The International Bird Rescue Research Center: Picks up oiled birds, cleans and rehabilitates them. You can donate or adopt a bird. Adopting costs up to $200.This donation will be used to raise and eventually release the bird into the wild.

BONUS: how to clean oil coated birds

The crude oil is very heavy and it is really hard to just wash off. Oil coated birds of the gulf are as a result unable to fly with all that oil stuck in their feather. To help them survive we can first gently rub their feather with vegetable oil which helps to break down the crude oil and then we can wash them with mild detergent.

People can go and wash off the crude oil on their bodies if they have to but birds or animals can’t, at least not as easily as we can. They need our help more than ever now. Let’s act. Let’s do something to give back their natural life and their habitat. Let’s not hurt the nature anymore.
